The Chargers were able to fly somewhat under the radar last year as the Chiefs and Broncos took the NFL by storm. They were able to win their last four games of the season going 9-7 even in the tough AFC West. The Chargers offense was one of most entertaining units in the league with playmakers at each position.
Philip Rivers who was once one of the NFL’s top quarterbacks but had a couple down years where many questioned whether or not his best years were behind him. But this year Rivers went off putting together one of the best years of his career with help from his veterans Antonio Gates and Danny Woodhead. Aswell as the emergence of rookie receiver Keenan Allen.
The Chargers offense should start looking for Gates’ protege in the draft this year, at 33 Gates is close to the end of his career. One route they can go in terms of offense is to find his replacement in the draft. Especially with the absence of a legit number two receiver another weapon added couldn’t hurt.
But with Eric Ebron most likely to be taken in the top 10 this might not be the route they take early in the draft. The next best tight end on the board would be Jace Amaro so they’ll still have the option to find his replacement early in the draft.
But the offense came together last year and was one of the best units in the game. They can beat you so many ways and they’re bringing back all of their key guys. Many want to see the team strengthen their defense more specifically on their defensive line.
The popular opinion is that they will take Louis Nix the big man out of Notre Dame. At 331 pounds the big fella will no doubt occupy blocks for guys like Donald Butler and Manti Te'o. I really like Nix because of his high motor and he’d fit in great with the Chargers defense. If Nix isn’t available the Chargers should go for Ra'shede Hageman out of Minnesota. Hageman is a beast and one of my favorite defensive tackles in the draft.
The team just needs to bring in guys that will rush the passer, especially since Peyton Manning is in their division. Last year their top sack guy was Corey Liuget with just five and a half sacks.
Guys like Hageman and Nix can each help the pass rush and the team needs a legit tackle on defense. Right now defensive line and pass rushers are what they need to fill first in this years draft.
