Most Surprising Fantasy Quarterbacks Throuh Three Weeks

Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons

After finishing last season as the 19th-best fantasy quarterback, Ryan tops the rankings heading into Week 4 of the 2016 season. That's an amazing realization to come to considering Julio Jones is the 30th-best fantasy receiver at this point in the season.

It's more about consistency than one dominating fantasy performance. Ryan has finished no worse than ninth in points in any of his three starts. He's thrown for nearly 1,000 yards with seven touchdowns and just one interception. That latter stat is most telling, as Ryan has averaged one pick per 40 pass attempts over the past three seasons.

It is, however, important to note that Ryan and the Falcons have not necessarily faced great defenses in the first three games. In fact, two of the games have come against the worst defenses the NFL has to offer in the Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints. The next three games against the Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks should be telling here. That's a murderer's row lineup of defenses right there.

Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles

Coming off a 300-yard, two-touchdown performance against a good Pittsburgh Steelers defense, Wentz is riding high early in his rookie season. In fact, there's not another quarterback that has performed this well as a rookie this early in his career in the history of the NFL. That's not spin. Statistically, it's the truth.

From a fantasy standpoint, there's a lot to like and a little to dislike here. Wentz ranks 10th among quarterbacks in fantasy points. He's thrown five touchdowns compared to zero interceptions. In fact, the rookie has not turned the ball over in over 220 offensive snaps.

Though, much like what we're seeing with Ryan, level of competition surely has played a role here. Philadelphia's first two games came against two brutal defenses in the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears. And while Pittsburgh presented a more difficult matchup, that's a one-game sample size.

The good news here is that Philadelphia takes on two suspect defenses in the Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins following its Week 4 bye. That bodes well for continued fantasy excellence from Wentz moving forward.

Matthew Stafford, Detroit Lions

There weren't many out there who believed Stafford would perform at a high level with Calvin Johnson in retirement. After all, here's a guy that finished as a bottom-end QB1 last season after putting up the 15th-most fantasy points back in 2014.

Now, through three weeks, Stafford finds himself as the third-best fantasy quarterback. He's put up nearly 1,000 yards with seven touchdowns and just two interceptions in 120 pass attempts. It's that latter number that should have people considering Stafford a top-end fantasy option, as he's previously been seen as a turnover-prone quarterback.
