Most Surprising Fantasy Tight Ends Through Three Weeks

1. Kyle Rudolph, Minnesota Vikings

We shouldn't be too surprised that Rudolph's stock has taken off with Sam Bradford now under center in Minnesota. As we saw last season with the Philadelphia Eagles, Bradford loves using his tight ends. However, there's no one out there besides Rudolph himself that thought he'd produce at this level through three games.

The former second-round pick ranks second among NFL tight ends in both targets and fantasy points. He also ranks first at this position in target shares, which is a huge thing to look at moving forward. Simply put, it means Bradford relies more on Rudolph than any other quarterback in the NFL relies on his tight end.

There are, however, a couple indicators that this success might be short-lived. Rudolph boasts a substandard 54 percent catch rate at tight end and has seen nearly half his fantasy points come in one game. Consistency might end up being a long-term issue here.

2. Jack Doyle, Indianapolis Colts

With 13 catches in 15 targets through three games, Doyle sure is making the most of his opportunities. He also boasts two touchdowns on the season, which is the primary reason he ranks in the top-five among tight ends in fantasy points heading into Week 4.

Let's make sure to take a step back here. Is Doyle someone we can rely on for top-10 fantasy production as the season progresses? Basic indicators tell us no. First off, he's being targeted an average of five times per game. Assuming his catch rate (87 percent) drops and those targets remain the same, there's going to be regression here.

Secondly, Indianapolis boasts another pass-catching tight end in Dwayne Allen who has been targeted just as much as Doyle and ranks 16th at this position in fantasy points.

Common sense seems to indicate, that while nice to see, Doyle's production won't be matched moving forward on the year. It's still a good story, and something we should keep an eye on moving forward.

3. Dennis Pitta, Baltimore Ravens

This is a really nice story here. Having played seven games over the past three seasons combined, Pitta has been able to return to old form here. It is one of the best stories of the young football season. The veteran tight end has found the magic with Joe Flacco once again.

He has caught 18-of-24 passes for 183 yards in three games. And despite not having posted a touchdown, Pitta is currently the eighth-best fantasy tight end heading into Week 4.

Unlike the other two players listed here, there's no real reason to believe Pitta won't continue to produce at a high level. He ranks fourth in targets, first in receptions and boasts a tremendous 75 percent catch rate. Considering Pitta's history of success with Flacco, we could be looking at a top-five fantasy tight end when all is said and done in 2016.
