New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis was having himself a breakout 2015 campaign when he tore his ACL Week 8 against Washington.
The former Pitt standout put up 622 total yards and four touchdowns while averaging 7.3 yards per touch in seven games. This came on the heels of him sitting out the entire 2014 season due to a lack of interest from NFL teams.
The good news here is that Lewis is expected to be ready in time for the start of the 2016 season.
Dr. James Andrews, who performed the knee surgery on the veteran running back, indicated to ESPN that Lewis is ahead of schedule in his recovery from said surgery.
With Lewis out of action for the final nine games of the 2015 season, New England put up 100-plus rushing yards just twice. Then in the playoffs, the Patriots tallied a total of 82 rushing yards in two games.
Whether this has a direct impact on what New England is going to do at the running back position in the offseason is anyone's guess.
Though, it must be noted that Lewis is considered nothing more than a change of pace (COP) back, meaning New England might very well look for an every-down back to upgrade its running back situation.
