NFC North Team Needs After Wave of Free Agency

The NFL action never stops, even after reporters broke free agent signings early, football continues to draw us in on a daily basis. Free agency is a time of excitement for football fans, new faces with new teams means renewed optimism for the coming season and the hope that it will give their team the push to make the next step.

While the NFC North has been relatively quiet this offseason, it also means teams haven't gone out and overspent to fill needs. The Chicago Bears are under new management and while their roster is still a work in progress, they have taken necesary first steps this offseason. in Mike Zimmer's second offseason with the Minnesota Vikings, Minnesota has retained their own free agents and brought in some help for Teddy Bridgewater

Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers continue their trend of keeping their young, core players like Randall Cobb and Bryan Bulaga. The Detroit Lions thankfully didn't overpay Ndamukong Suh, opting to replace him with Haloti Ngata.

Let's take a look at where each team's needs stand after the first wave of free agency.

Green Bay Packers

Added: Scott Tolzien (re-signed), Randall Cobb (re-signed), Bryan Bulaga (re-signed)

Needs:

Cornerback: While Green Bay did an excellent job retaining its stars on offense, they were unable to bring back either Davon House or Tramon Williams. This leaves the Packers in a desperate situation at cornerback, with their only option as their No.2 outside cornerback being nickel corner Casey Hayward or safety/nickel corner Micah Hyde. A strength of Green Bay's defense last season was their secondary, they will need to address the cornerback position early if they hope to keep that strength intact.

Inside Linebacker: The Packers have been in need of an upgrade at inside linebacker the past two seasons, but now is finally the year we will see them address it. After cutting Brad Jones and A.J. Hawk, Green Bay is left with three inside linebackers on its roster (Sam Barrington, Carl Bradford, Joe Thomas). Given the likes of Eric Kendricks, Stephone Anthony and Paul Dawson, it's likely we see Green Bay take an inside linebacker within the first 60 picks.

Minnesota Vikings

Added: Matt Asiata (re-signed), Mike Harris (re-signed), Joe Berger (re-signed), Shaun Hill, Mike Wallace (trade)

Needs:

Wide Receiver: While the addition of Wallace gives Bridgewater a different target in the passing game, he still needs more in order to thrive in this offense. Fortunately, the 2015 wide receiver class is once again loaded. While the acquisition of Wallace would likely lead to not taking a wide receiver with the 11th overall pick, passing up on one of Amari Cooper, Kevin White or DeVante Parker would be tough to do. If the decision is made to go in another direction, Minnesota can still find a starting wide receiver in Round 2.

Offensive Line: Under Mike Zimmer, you can feel very comfortable that he will mold young, defensive players and put together a great defense. With Norv Turner as his offensive coordinator, Minnesota must continue to help their franchise quarterback. One of Minnesota's glaring weaknesses last season was the offensive line, it was a good play when Bridgewater had two seconds to stand in the pocket. Upgrading the offensive line must be a crucial point of Minnesota's 2015 draft.

Detroit Lions

Added: Kellen Moore (re-signed), Rashean Mathis (re-signed), Dan Orlovsky (re-sighed), Matt Prater (re-signed), Josh Bynes (re-signed), Tom Johnson (re-signed), Tyrunn Walker, Haloti Ngata (trade)

Needs:

Right Tackle: While the Lions have done a nice job hitting on recent draft picks and protecting Matthew Stafford, more help is needed. While LaAdrian Waddle was adequate last season as Detroit's starting right tackle, he struggled to stay on the field. Detroit should explore upgrading at right tackle via the draft, there will be options in the first three rounds and Waddle is a replaceable player.

Cornerback: Even after bringing Mathis back on a two-year deal, the Lions are in need of another outside cornerback for the future to start opposite of Darius Slay. Mathis has the ability to be a solid No.2 outside corner this year, but his days are numbered before he will retire. Detroit could stay in state with Michigan State CB Trae Waynes or hope Marcus Peters falls to them. But Detroit must address the cornerback position this year and it's best to do it early.

Chicago Bears

Added: Jimmy Clausen (re-signed), Eddie Royal, Pernell McPhee, Antrel Rolle, Vladimir Ducasse, Thomas Gafford

Needs:

Wide Receiver: Trading Brandon Marshall was a smart move, it clears the air in the locker room and created more cap room for the Bears. But it also leaves a need at wide receiver, even after signing Royal and with Marquess Wilson on the roster. While Alshon Jeffery can step up this season as Jay Cutler's top target, the passing game needs balance and that could come from Amari Cooper.

Defense: This seems very vague, but Chicago seriously needs to just add talent to this defense. It's not just because they are transitioning to a 3-4 defense and they have needs in the secondary, linebacker and defensive line. But new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is also a magician at taking pieces and using them in various, genius ways. This team just desperately needs talent and shouldn't pass on taking the best defensive player available with their picks.
