As Saturday comes to a close, the NFL Draft has come and gone, and now we have to wait another 365 days until it comes back. This year’s draft was filled with excitement, trades and emotion. Each moment was unique, and Day Three was no exception. While rounds four through seven typically are filled with players who are drafted for depth, special teams and developmental projects, there were still plenty of big names still available this year.
Here are some of the biggest stories from Day Three of the NFL Draft.
Michael Sam
Michael Sam became the first openly gay player to be drafted by an NFL organization on Saturday, drafted 249th overall by the St. Louis Rams. While there have likely been many players in the league who are homosexual, Sam was a trailblazer, as he was the first to make it publicly known before he entered the draft. While there will likely be a ton of media coverage following him every step of his career, now that he has been drafted, it is the time to let Sam define himself as an NFL player on his own, as Ethan Hammerman wrote a few months ago. Nevertheless, it was an exciting moment.
Defensive Backs
As the NFL progresses more and more towards a pass heavy league, the need for defensive backs is growing. After nine defensive backs were drafted on Thursday, Saturday saw a whopping 37 players from defensive backfields drafted. Overall, 51 defensive backs were drafted, the most of any positional group.
SEC Quarterbacks
A.J. McCarron, Zach Mettenberger, and Aaron Murray were all heralded players at their respective schools, all powerhouses in the SEC. However, all three had to wait until Saturday to hear their name called. Murray was the first off the board, taken by Kansas City with the 163rd pick, and McCarron was drafted by Cincinnati with the next pick. Mettenberger had to wait a little bit longer, but Tennessee scooped him up in the sixth round. All three ended up in interesting situations, with quarterbacks who are in the final year of their contract, so while they were drafted lower than others, they will receive an opportunity to make a run at starting jobs in 2015.
Best Value Picks
To begin the day, several of eDraft’s highly rated players were still on the board. Here are some of the picks that teams maximized value:
- David Yankey: Yankey was eDraft’s 27th overall player, and ranked as the best guard in the class. However, reports surfaced before the draft that Yankey was a candidate to slide, and he definitely did until the Vikings broke his fall at the 145th pick.
- Cyril Richardson: Another guard that fell on Draft weekend. Richardson was 34th on eDraft’s board, but was viewed as “soft” by some, and it reflected in his draft position. Richardson was eventually drafted by Buffalo in the middle of the fifth round, and was among three massive offensive linemen the Bills added, along with Cyrus Kouandjio and Seantrel Henderson.
- Yawin Smallwood: Smallwood may have been the biggest steal of the draft. Off-ball linebackers slid during the draft, especially those who did not test well, and Smallwood was no exception. eDraft’s 59th overall player was picked 253rd by the Atlanta Falcons, nearly 200 spots below his ranking. However, the Falcons were able to capitalize on other teams being scared away by poor testing numbers, and walked away with a potential starter for their defense.
