NFL Draft Fantasy Slant: Bears Select Mitch Trubisky

Player: Mitch Trubisky

Position: Quarerback

College: North Carolina

Draft Review

Chicago traded up from the third overall pick to No. 2, sending two third-round picks and a fourth-round pick to the San Francisco 49ers in the process. It was a major haul to pay to move up one spot, but apparently the Bears figured they had a franchise quarterback on their hands here.

Most experts figured Trubisky would be off the board in the top five, so picking him at two isn't necessarily a reach. It just remains to be seen how quickly he can make an impact for the Bears moving forward.

What the Scouts Say

"Trubisky is a high-end quarterback prospect who possesses NFL size, a big arm and the ability to throw with accuracy from the pocket or on the move. Despite playing in a spread-based offense, he's a full-field reader who does a very good job of getting an early read on the safeties before crafting his course of action.

Trubisky will have to become much more pocket aware and do a better job of recognizing and attacking blitzes to back NFL defensive coordinators off. He hasn't put all the pieces together yet, but the puzzle is all right in front. Trubisky projects as a good starting quarterback with a high floor and the potential to be great."

NFL Media

With only one year of college starting experience under his belt, Trubisky is seen as a project. He boasts the most upside of any quarterback in the class, but also has an incredibly low floor. The former North Carolina standout will have to learn the nuances of the NFL and play catch-up in the film room to be considered anywhere near ready to take the field.

Depth Chart Competition

Chicago added former Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Mike Glennon on a three-year, $45 million contract back in March. Needless to say, Glennon will likely be the team's Week 1 starter. Though, in an interesting turn, the Bears can get out from under his contract after just one season. That's surely something to keep an eye on.

Fantasy Outlook

Absolutely no real value in re-draft only leagues. Short of Glennon getting injured or absolutely blowing up, Trubisky won't see the field in 2017. And in reality, the Bears likely hope here that he doesn't see the field. He's simply not ready to take on a starter role. Should that happen, a repeat of what we saw from Jared Goff in Los Angeles would likely be in the cards.

From a dyno aspect, we'd have to conclude that Trubisky is the second-best long-term option taken in Round 1 behind only Deshaun Watson, now of the Kansas City Chiefs. Chicago has talent in place on offfense with Jordan Howard at running back and Kevin White at receiver. It's a young talent that could build something with Trubisky over the long term.
