Today in the first official day of NFL free agency a couple top defensive backs sign long term deals with top teams.
Top safeties Jairus Byrd and T.J. Ward each signed deals on the first day, Byrd with the New Orleans Saints and Ward with the Broncos. Both players were thought to be top options at the safety position.
The Broncos may now have the best defensive back group in the league after they also sign one of the top cornerbacks Aqib Talib, while Alterraun Verner signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Ward and Talib join two very talented defensive backs in Denver, Chris Harris who had an awesome year filling in for Champ Bailey, and Rahim Moore who has developed into a top coverage safety. Both deals were long term, reports say Ward received a four-year, $23 Million deal with $14 Million guaranteed. Talib signed a six-year, $57 Million deal with $26 Million guaranteed.
Byrd was thought to be the top free agent in this years class. He signs with a New Orleans team that has struggled with defense in the past. The five foot ten 203 pound safety should provide much needed help in the secondary. Last year he intercepted four passes in just 11 games played. The Saints hope he’ll build on that success and help them get back to the playoffs.
Verner in his fifth year from UCLA had a Pro Bowl year for the Tennessee Titans. He agreed to a four-year, $26.5 Million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with $14 Million guaranteed. The Buccaneers unlike the previous teams are on the outside looking in and Verner is a great place to start on their trip to the top. With top offensive teams like New Orleans, Atlanta, and Carolina in the division you need a top corner to shut down receivers like Roddy White, Julio Jones, and Steve Smith.
