2013 NFL Draft: Senior Bowl Review

If there was one word that could describe the Senior Bowl it would be sloppy.   There was not a single quarterback, running back or wide receiver that just took over the game offensively.  There were a few defensive players that stood out to me in this game.

Ezekial Ansah seemed to make the biggest impact in this game and not just on the field either.  He seemed to solidify the comparisons between him and Jason Pierre-Paul.  They both burst onto the seen in college football not having much expierence playing the game.  Whether it was bursting off the line with a swim move, spinning off a block or using his power to bull rush the opposing lineman.  He came out of his stance quickly and was on almost every play when he was on the field.  If it weren’t for an injury to a defensive end at BYU we may have never heard of Ansah, it is all about taking advantage of a situation.

A player that was not on my radar was Missouri linebacker Zavier Gooden.  He plays the weakside linebacker spot and made a few plays including interception Zac Dysert made on a terrible throw to Kenjon Barner coming out of the backfield.  The knock on Gooden is in inability to make plays in the run game.  He is more of pass defender, but needs to improve against the run game to be considered a top level draft prospect.

The only good offensive drives in this game came with E.J. Manuel in the game at quarterback.  He used his mobility to get away from pressure and put some touch on the ball with his touchdown pass to Alabama tight end Michael Williams.  Manuel scored another touchdown on the ground (even though he was down before the score) and then Mike James scored on their final drive.

One thing that remains to be seen is which of these players made any strides to moving up in the draft.  Scouts and general managers are going to need to see something at the upcoming combine workouts and pro days.
