We are now at the halfway mark of the season and the playoff picture begins to develop. This is when some teams make moves to improve their playoff chances and others start to look towards next year. But does every team with a losing record have to pack it in and look to the future? Some teams that have losing records are still very much in the playoff hunt and some still have a chance to win their division. Which one of these teams have the best chance to do just that? and why?
Washington Redskins
They’ve played absolutely terrible and they aren’t a very deep team in terms of talent so its not a surprise that they find themselves at 2-5. They also have one of the toughest schedules which makes it that much harder. They have a shot at making the playoffs for a couple different reasons.
The first reason would be Robert Griffin III and Alfred Morris two very talented second year guys that fuel the offense. Morris and Griffin can carry this offense if given some support from the o-line. When Morris has holes to run through and Griffin has time in the pocket this offense can explode for points against the best defenses. These two playing at a high level will make any team a contender in their division.
Also the NFC East looks like it might be the worst division in the league if we’re going by every teams record. The Dallas Cowboys are in the lead at 4-4 with the Philadelphia Eagles in second at 3-5. The Redskins still have to play the New York Giants twice and the Cowboys and Eagles once more. If they can steal a game or two from non division teams this gives them the opportunity to write their own destiny.
New York Giants
Same reason for the Redskins the division is terrible. They started off 0-6 but have won the last two games which may mean the Eli Manning and the boys got their groove back. The Giants and Redskins are also two teams that have proven that they can grind out the last eight games of a season and make the playoffs when it was thought to be impossible. The Cowboys lead these teams by two games but have been proven to struggle in the last part of the season. This may give them the opportunity to make a big run and win the division.
I think that this division like last year will come down to the final game of the season. The Giants have the leadership in place to carry this team to a division Championship. Look for guys like Manning, Brandon Jacobs, Victor Cruz, Ryan Mundy, and Antrel Rolle to put this team on their back. My prediction is that they will meet Washington a final game show down for the division and the chance to go to the playoffs.
Baltimore Ravens
The defending champs sit at second in the division at 3-4. They haven’t played well these first couple games and have lost a lot of key players from last years Super Bowl team. But they still have a lot of talent starting with running back Ray Rice. He is their best player on offense but he hasn’t played well in the first half mostly because of an injury he suffered early in the year. This team realizes on him to help them move the ball, if he can pick up his play on the field they can easily get a wild card spot or maybe catch the Bengals.
Another player that needs to step up for the Ravens is the big money man Joe Flacco. He’s the franchise but has looked very average this season. If can recapture some of the magic from the postseason last year this team will be very hard to beat. This team is also very talented and know what it takes to win which gives them a good chance to pull off the come back.
This is why I think the Ravens have the best chance to make the playoffs as a team with a losing record. They still have to play the Cincinnati Bengals twice and I really don’t see them losing both those games. They also still have the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers once more I think they’ll win each of those. Add in the fact that they have some non division games that are very winnable.
They also aren't in a very deep hole as they are only one game below the 500 mark. They have everything they need to be successful so look for them to take advantage of that. Good luck to all these teams but for some reason I don’t think the Ravens really need it, they’ll make the postseason with ease.
