NFL Week 4 Preview: Saints at Cowboys

This Sunday night the 1-2 New Orleans Saints will go against the 2-1 Dallas Cowboys. Neither team is particularly good on defense and both have explosive weapons on offense so it’s probably going to be a shootout. Here are some of the key matchups:

Tony Romo vs Saints Secondary

After a terrible Week 1 against the San Francisco 49ers, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been better than people realize. What’s going to help Romo out a lot this week is going against the second lowest rated team in pass coverage according to PFF (subscription). Their three worst players in coverage (Keenan Lewis, Patrick Robinson, and Kenny Vaccaro) are starters in their secondary. What this means is that a bad game from a linebacker against a tight end or their fourth cornerback in Dime packages isn’t bringing down the total pass coverage grade. The players making their grade so bad are their starters in the secondary. The two players on the Cowboys I’m expecting big games from against this secondary is wide receiver Dez Bryant and tight end Jason Witten.

Saints Away From Home

It’s no secret, the Saints are a completely different team when they’re not playing in the Superdome. In particular, quarterback Drew Brees is a different player in away games. In home games in 2013, Brees averaged a PFF passing grade of 3.8. In away games he mustered a 0.48 grade. That’s a noticeable difference. Unfortunately for the Saints, Sunday night’s game is in Dallas.

Drew Brees vs Cowboys Defense

The Cowboys defense doesn’t seem to be quite as bad as last season, but they’re pretty bad still. Not to mention, their secondary is in flux with the recent demotion and subsequent “hissy fit” thrown by cornerback Morris Claiborne. This defense is going to get pretty much all they can handle from the likes of Brees, tight end Jimmy Graham, and rookie wide receiver Brandin Cooks. Graham and Cooks present very big matchup problems for the Cowboys and Brees will exploit those matchups early and often.

I see this game ending one of two ways; either the Saints win in a blowout or the Cowboys win a close one. While the game is in Dallas, it’s going to be really hard for the Cowboys’ secondary to slow Brees down, especially with their secondary being in such turmoil. The Saints also know they can’t drop to 1-3 and fall further behind the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers in the division. Even if this game starts slow, I see the Saints running away with it late and winning by more than a touchdown.
