Week 3 was quite the week for AFC West teams. The Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos both improved to 3-0 to lead the division, while the Chargers and Raiders fell to 1-2 losing their Week 3 matchups.
Well, the loss of Ryan Clady and Von Miller hasn’t phased the Denver Broncos as they continue to showcase just why they’re considered the best team in the AFC. There’s no doubt they have the best offense led, of course, by Peyton Manning. The Sheriff, or Surgeon as some like to call him, continues to break records and is on pace to have a career season. He set a NFL record with 12 touchdown passes through three games and is on pace to throw 77 this year, which would surpass Tom Brady’s record of 50. There’s still a lot of football to play, but with the way Manning's performing anything is possible. This week Denver will host the 1-2 Philadelphia Eagles, in what should be another easy win for Denver. The Eagles have struggled this year and Michael Vick has had trouble leading the offense as he threw two picks last week against the Chiefs. Expect Manning to have another career game against this Philly defense, and improve to 4-0 on the year.
This week, the undefeated Chiefs will host a struggling Eli Manning and the New York Giants. Manning already has eight picks on the season, and this very good Kansas City defense will be hungry for some turnovers. Alex Smith has looked good so far for the Chiefs and gets better by the week working with a new offense. Last week the Chiefs beat the Eagles 26-16, and are showing just how improved they are. The Giants, on the other hand, are 0-3 and lost to the Panthers 38-0 last Sunday. Kansas City will look to take advantage of the Giants struggles, keep pace with Denver in the division, and improve to 4-0. Arrowhead Stadium is one of the most difficult and loudest stadiums to play in, so the home crowd will give the Chiefs yet another advantage in this one.
The 1-2 Oakland Raiders didn’t play the Broncos like they wanted to, losing 37-21 on Monday Night. A positive, however, was the Raiders defense gave up the least amount of points to Manning and the Denver offense; baby steps, Raiders, baby steps. The Washington Redskins come to Oakland for Week 4, in a big game for both teams. The Redskins are a surprising 0-3 to start the year and look to get their first win of 2013, the Raiders on the other hand, look to improve to 2-2 in front of their home crowd. It won’t be easy, for the Raiders, especially if quarterback Terrelle Pryor isn’t cleared to play. Pryor suffered a concussion from a nasty hit by the Broncos defense. There hasn’t been word on Pryor’s status for this week, as he continues to undergo precautionary tests, but if he isn’t a go for Sunday, there’s always Matt Flynn who finished the game for the silver and black on Monday. Tracy Porter also suffered a concussion, and at the moment his status is also unknown. The Raiders showed fight in Denver, and with the struggling Redskins coming to Oaktown, they have a good chance to take advantage and even their record at 2-2.
The San Diego Chargers appeared to have a win for Week 3 in Tennessee, but due to a fourth quarter comeback, the Chargers let another win slip past them as the Titans won 20-17. The Chargers allowed 10 points in the fourth quarter and weren’t able to score. Philip Rivers had an average game, and they couldn’t get a good run game going. This week, the Chargers will host the 2-1 Dallas Cowboys, who are coming off a 31-7 victory against the Rams. The Chargers have played competitive this year, but haven’t been able to finish games. They could be 3-0, but instead are 1-2 because they let games slip away and aren’t able to retain control throughout the four quarters. They’ve had fourth quarter meltdowns which won’t get you wins in the NFL. The Chargers will look to improve to 2-2, but it won’t be easy. Again, this has the potential to be another close game, but the Cowboys have shown improvement this year and will be a tough opponent for San Diego.
Week 4 will be an entertaining one in the AFC West. Two teams will attempt to remain undefeated, and Manning will look to have another top notch performance. Enjoy Week 4!
