San Francisco 49ers 13, Seattle Seahawks 6
This was one of those hit you in the mouth, see who is standing last type of games. In reality, Seattle and San Francisco played a game that would have made the old NFC Central, the Black and Blue Division, proud.
In the end, San Francisco came out on top and regained sole possession of first place in the division. They did so with a dominating type of defense performance that allowed just one Russell Wilson completion in the second half. Meanwhile, Frank Gore touched the ball 21 times for a total of 182, completely shredding apart of Seattle defense that was damn near unbeatable on the ground.
It wasn’t pretty by any stretch of the imagination, but a defensive struggle like this really does give you an appreciation for the way both teams play football. While Seattle fell in the end, they proved that they can contend without much on the offensive side of the ball.
Minnesota Vikings 21, Arizona Cardinals 14
John Skelton was sacked a total of seven times as Arizona quarterbacks are currently on pace to go down a total of 80 times this season. That just isn’t sustainable if the Cardinals want to contend in the NFC West moving forward.
Minnesota took a 7-0 lead on an Adrian Peterson 13-yard touchdown run that capped off an impressive five play, 88 yard drive. Peterson gained 46 yards on three attempts during that initial scoring drive.
On the very next drive Arizona ran 13 plays and gained 74 yards before a Skelton fumble turned the ball over inside Minnesota’s 20. A Christian Ponder interception in the second led to a LaRod Stephens-Howling touchdown run to tie the game up. Arizona’s third-string running back gained over 100 yards on the ground for the day.
Minnesota countered with a three yard touchdown pass from Ponder to Percy Harvin to take a 14-7 lead at the half. They expanded it to a two touchdown difference as rookie safety Harrison Smith returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown on the Cardinals initial possession of the second half.
Arizona has now lost three consecutive games after starting the season 4-0 and have to go up against the division leading San Francisco 49ers next Monday night. Meanwhile, the Vikings are 5-2 and in second place in the NFC North.
Green Bay Packers 30, St. Louis Rams 20
Aaron Rodgers was at it once again on Sunday. The reigning NFL MVP compiled 342 yards and had three touchdown passes of 3, 5, and 39 yards. Meanwhile, the Rams offense just couldn’t keep pace as they were forced to held to two field goals in the first three quarters prior to accumulating two touchdowns in garbage time late in the game.
This game started out semi-competitive as Green Bay was held to just a four point halftime lead. But before you knew it the Packers were up 30-13 late in the game, marking a second consecutive impressive victory for a team that had struggled through the first five games of the season.
Green Bay is now 4-3 and in third place in the NFC North. Meanwhile, the Rams lost their second consecutive games are are now in last place in the NFC West, two games behind the 49ers.
