NFL Week 9 Review: AFC East

Buffalo Bills 9, Houston Texans 21

On Sunday Buffalo Bills Mario Williams returned to Houston to face the team that drafted him number one overall in 2006 in this mid season clash of AFC teams. The first place Texans over powered the Bills most of the game and continued to impose their first place dominance. The Bills fought valiantly but in the end were no match for the AFC South leading Texans.

The Houston offense unleashed their arsenal on Buffalo’s porous defense Sunday. Texan’s quarterback Matt Schaub tossed a couple touchdown passes, while running back Arian Foster pounded the Bills on the ground running for 111 yards. This statistic may not shock you since Buffalo is the NFL’s worst ranked run defense. Andre Johnson added to the assault by catching eight passes for 118 yards.

Williams first return to Reliant Stadium was not a total loss. Williams managed to get one sack and had five tackles in the game. Houston is on a hot streak winning seven of their last eight games. Sunday was not the best performance by the Texans but it was enough to win. Next week Houston will have to play much sharper as the face the also 7-1 Chicago Bears.

Miami Dolphins 20, Indianapolis Colts 23

Andrew Luck showed why he was the number one overall pick in this year’s NFL draft. Luck set a rookie record with 433 passing yards surpassing Cam Newton’s record set just last year. The Colts playing behind the inspiration of head coach Chuck Pagano’s fight with cancer, beat the Miami Dolphins at home 23-20.

This show down of surprising AFC teams show cased two of the NFL’s future stars at quarterback Luck and Tannehill of Miami. The two quarterbacks went back and forth all game but in the end Luck would prevail as Miami’s secondary was torched for over 400 yards passing. Tannehill kept the Dolphins in the game and had his team leading at one point in the contest but the Dolphins couldn’t seem to get Luck and the Colts offense off the field. A late touchdown pass by Luck put the Colts ahead for the final time and sealed the game for the Colts.

The future is bright for these two teams, as they enter the second half of the season with playoff aspirations. The Colts continue with their storybook season sitting pretty at 5-3 and positioned well to make a run at a wild card spot. Miami must regroup and shore up the secondary if they wish to remain in the playoff hunt.
