While most of us would agree that the New Orleans Saints and Oakland Raiders game set to take place this afternoon doesn't have a whole lot of intrigue embedded within it, you can bet that there will be some fantasy fireworks lighting up the sky at O.Co in Oakland.
This game pits two of the worst defenses in the National Football League against one another. It also seems to possess some really solid fantasy options across the board.
Time to take a look at the defensive rankings for each of these teams.
| Team | PPG | Pass | Rush | Total |
| New Orleans | 28.4 (28th) | 307.3 (31st) | 162.0 (32nd) | 469.3 (32nd) |
| Oakland | 31.6 (32nd) | 255.9 (24th) | 119.0 (21st) | 374.9 (23rd) |
Both defenses are in the bottom 10 of the NFL in nearly every single defensive category. New Orleans ranks last or second-to-last in run, pass and overall defense. You can definitely expect Oakland to have a strong game on the offensive side of the ball. Additionally, New Orleans ranks fourth in overall offense and is going up against a Raiders' defense that is 23rd in total defense and dead last in scoring defense.
Yeah, this has the makings for one of those ol' seven-on-seven drills. Time to look at the individual players here for a second.
Drew Brees, New Orleans Saints
Brees ranks second overall in fantasy points behind Aaron Rodgers, but hasn't exactly lit it up recently. He is averaging just 17.3 fantasy points over the last three games after putting up an average of 29 in the previous three games. The difference here is that Brees was going up against decent pass defenses in his last three games in the form of the Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and Atlanta Falcons.
It goes without saying that Brees should be able to eat apart a Raiders' secondary that is in flux right now. They just signed former San Francisco 49ers practice squad player Cory Nelms, who will actually get snaps in this game. Additionally, safety-turned-corner Michael Huff will get some play on the outside. This is a recipe for disaster for an Oakland defense that was torched by the Baltimore Ravens last week.
Carson Palmer, Oakland Raiders
A lot of people want to blame Oakland's struggles on Palmer. While he is definitely part of it due to a tendency to throw interceptions, Palmer has actually been the Raiders best offensive player through 10 weeks. In terms of fantasy value, he has been a stud recently. He is now the ninth ranked fantasy quarterback and has put up an average of nearly 21 points in his last four games. There is absolutely no reaso to believe that New Orleans will be able to contain him in the passing game. It is also important to note that the Raiders are going with a fullback as their primary running back. Look for Palmer to put the ball up a minimum of 50 times in this one.
Darren Sproles, New Orleans Saints (Questionable)
It appears that Sproles, who has missed the last two games due to a hand injury, will be a game time decision this afternoon. If Sproles plays. he is definitely a solid FLEX option, especially in PPR leagues. Oakland's linebackers have struggled covering from between the hashes and won't be able to contain this mighty man.
Pierre Thomas, New Orleans Saints
It really doesn't matter if Sproles plays, you can expect Thomas to have a solid fantasy day. Oakland's defense is allowing nearly 120 yards on the ground per game and has been eaten alive by solid offensive lines. The Saints' unit definitely fits that mold. Prior to struggling against the Atlanta Falcons last week, Thomas had been a solid performer for New Orleans. He put up nearly 50 yards per game in the previous five outings before Week 10.
Mark Ingram, New Orleans Saints
This former first-round pick from Alabama has had two solid weeks in a row after struggling through the first half of the season. Ingram is averaging 67 yards and nearly seven fantasy points in his last two games. His success today will depend a great deal on the availability of Sproles and performance of Thomas. Ingram is definitely an under-the-radar FLEX option today.
Marcel Reece, Oakland Raiders
Reece has made the most of his opportunity since both Darren McFadden and Mike Goodson went down to injury. He has compiled nearly 200 yards in the last two games. More importantly, Reece has turned in some stellar PPR performances with 15 receptions during that span. I fully expect Palmer to go in his direction on screens in order to keep a strong Saints' pass-rush grounded. I am expecting over 100 total yards and a score from Reece today.
Marques Colston, New Orleans Saints
Don't look now, but Colston has performed like a WR1 this season. He ranks ninth among wide receivers in fantasy points and third in touchdowns (seven). Who is going to be able to cover this talented receiver on the outside? Oakland's two starting cornerbacks today are going to be Michael Huff and Ronald Bartell, neither of whom are anywhere near ready to go up against Colston. Expect top five wide receiver production today.
Lance Moore, New Orleans Saints
If Bartell is going up against Colston you can expect Huff to be lined up opposite Moore. Really? That just doesn't seem to be a fair matchup at this point. Moore is a great down field threat and should be able to have his way with the former safety. Though Huff has played decently, I just don't see him being able to contain a receiver that has recorded 28 receptions for 365 yards in the last five games.
Devery Henderson, New Orleans Saints
Whether Henderson is lined up in the slot against Joselio Hansen or on the outside against Huff, or even against Bartel, I don't see him having a major impact here. There is a simple reason for this. Brees is going to have open lanes to throw the ball to his top three or four (depending on Sproles) targets. Don't expect a whole heck of a lot here.
Denarius Moore, Oakland Raiders
This second-year receiver from Tennessee has been a consistently good WR2 option through the first 10 weeks of the season. He has put up nearly 13 fantasy points per outing over the last five games. Look for Moore to have an absolutely huge game against one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL.
Darrius Heyward-Bey, Oakland Raiders (Questionable)
I had Heyward-Bey as a solid WR2 option at the start of the season. This didn't work out early, especially with the neck injury he suffered against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 3. He has, however, come up big since returning from that injury. Heyward-Bey is averaging over 70 yards and has two scores in his last four games. Again, check the injury reports prior to the game as he is highly questionable to play.
Rod Streater, Oakland Raiders
This undrafted rookie free agent is definitely a wildcard today. Streater can provide a consistent target for Palmer on the outside and will receive a lot of targets if this game becomes the shootout that I expect it to be. Look for Streater to put up solid PPR numbers, either in the slot or on the outside.
Jimmy Graham, New Orleans Saints
What Graham has done recently is beyond stupid. He has 281 yards and four touchdowns over the course of the last three games. New Orleans was also going up against some better defenses than what it is going to see today against Oakland. I expect Graham to abuses a lackluster group of linebackers and safeties this afternoon.
Brandon Myers, Oakland Raiders
As I have mentioned before, Myers would have been a solid TE1 option through the first half of the season, but his inability to get into the end zone held him back. Myers has now tallied an average of 12 fantasy points and scored two touchdowns in as many games. Look for him to get targets early and often.
