Phillip Dorsett Impresses in Preseason Debut

Many wondered what the Indianapolis Colts were thinking when they selected Phillip Dorsett with the 29th overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. Indianapolis already had T.Y. Hilton, Andre Johnson, Donte Moncrief and Duron Carter on the roster, the fit seemed odd. But there have been some positive reports about the rookie shining in camp, playing multiple positions.

Dorsett had plenty of opportunities in the Colts' preseason opener against the Philadelphia Eagles. Hilton and Moncrief were both out, allowing Dorsett to get in significant snaps. The amount of snaps was important but even more crucial was spending time working with Andrew Luck, developing timing and chemistry. Dorsett was the Colts' leading receiver on Sunday, being targeted eight times and hauling in four receptions for 51 yards.

The numbers were great to see but more importantly, there was evident chemistry and timing between Luck and Dorsett. He ran some strong, clean routes and became a trusted target for Luck with Hilton out. Dorsett got in some time versus starters from the Eagles' defense and was ready for the speed and intensity of the NFL. Indianapolis also clearly has a plan for him, moving him around on offense and letting him use his speed and explosiveness to separate from coverage and get open for play making opportunities.

There's a real possibility if Dorsett continues to shine throughout camp and the preseason, he will become the Colts' third receiver. Indianapolis loves to throw the football, which would give Dorsett a significant role in this offense. The Colts will spread the ball around, so Dorsett will be fighting for some targets, but a strong preseason makes him worth a late-round flier in standard scoring re-draft leagues.
