No one wants to see injuries happen during the preseason. However, it's an innevitable aspect of what has to be considered a ridiculously long exhibition slate around the NFL world.
Playing an extra game due to their matchup with the Minnesota Vikings in the Hall of Fame Game on Sunday night, the Steelers were the first team to feel this wrath.
Dependable kicker Shaun Suisham tore his ACL during the team's first preseason game against the Vikings in Canton, Ohio. He's now lost for the season, leaving Pittsburgh to look at the veteran free-agent market for a replacement.
Normally, losing a kicker wouldn't be huge news. That's definitely not the case here. Suisham, a 10-year veteran, has been among the best kickers in the game over the past few seasons. Since the start of the 2012 season, the 33-year-old kicker has converted on 87-of-95 field goal attempts for a whopping 92 percent success rate. During that very same span, Suisham has converted on 89 percent of his attempts of 40-plus yards, including a perfect 30-for-30 on attempts between 40 and 49 yards.
