Pro Football Hall of Fame: Getting it Wrong Again!

The Pro Football Hall of Fame selection process is an absolute joke. This was proved in full on Saturday when some certain Hall of Famers were left off in lieu of what I would call lesser players. In order for this process to be taken seriously, it needs to be changed.

Former Los Angeles Rams, Pittsburgh Steelers, Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers linebacker Kevin Greene, who ranks third on the All-Time NFL list in sacks with 160, was left out. For the record, Greene is just behind Bruce Smith and Reggie White and ahead of Chris Doleman, all Hall of Famers, on that list.

Meanwhile, Michel Strahan (141.5 career sacks) was also left off.

While I will not going on record in saying that Warren Sapp didn't deserve to be inducted, I will conclude that both Greene and Strahan are equally worthy of Canton.

Is Bill Parcells a Hall of Fame head coach? Well, two Super Bowl Championships might say so. It is, however, important to note that Parcells finished his coaching career (until he comes back again) with a 24-24 record in Dallas.

Former Minnesota Vikings' wide receiver Cris Carter finally got a Hall of Fame nod more than a decade after his retirement. Considering Carter ranks fourth all-time in receptions (1,101), ninth in yards (13,899) and fourth in receiving touchdowns (130), it has to be a slap in the face that it took this long for him to get into Canton.

Meanwhile, the likes of Tim Brown and Andre Reed, who combined for 16 Pro Bowl and five Super Bowl appearances, missed the cut. They also don't stand a great chance to make it with Marvin Harrison becoming eligible in the relatively near future.

As it is, writers seem to have a bias against members of the Oakland Raiders franchise. Cliff Branch, Ken Stabler, Ray Guy, Lester Hayes, and Brown himself, are still waiting to get in. That's an absolute joke!

How can the selection process be fixed? First off, enable more writers to actually be able to vote. Right now, some of the top scribes around the world of football are not involved in the voting. The respected Peter King from CNNSI has brought up the idea of stepping down. His reasons for this is that 20 years is enough time and some new blood needs to be added. As of right now, only 44 members choose who goes into the Hall of Fame.

Personally, I just don't find the current process legitimate. Unless it changes, those who are inducted into the Hall of Fame are a product of an imperfect system that leaves too many quality players out.

That's my take.
