Projected Kansas City Chiefs Fantasy Surprise

Last season, the Kansas City Chiefs sent six players to the Pro Bowl, but only one of them, (Jamaal Charles) being an offensive player. With new coach Andy Reid at the helm, the Chiefs will likely have a few more offensive Pro Bowlers in the near future. Some think Alex Smith has a chance; others think Dwayne Bowe is a lock. No one doubts this team will be better under Reid, especially the offense. This is why third year wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin could be a surprise in fantasy football this season.

At 6’4 and 230 pounds, Baldwin definitely has an NFL body. He has not gotten much attention on the field since he was drafted in the first round a few years ago, but that will change this season. Typically, a third year wide receiver has a high likelihood to break out, and Baldwin is no exception. Alex Smith is the best quarterback the Chiefs have had since Baldwin was drafted, and it could prove to pay big dividends in the Chiefs passing game.

Andy Reid has typically been a pass happy coach, and for good reason. Reid was the Packers quarterbacks’ coach when Brett Favre was in Green Bay, and Reid drafted Donovan McNabb and threw the ball often with him. Reid will likely continue the trend this year, and his number two receivers always see targets.  In the last four seasons, the Eagles number two receiver was Jeremy Maclin. In the last four seasons since Maclin was drafted, he has amassed 258 catches on 426 targets. That is over 100 targets per season. Prior to Maclin, the number two receiver was Hank Baskett. By no means was Hank Baskett a good NFL receiver, but that is the point. He caught 33 balls under Andy Reid.

If Jon Baldwin can officially lock up the number two receiver job, he will be a player worth drafting for high upside. As you can see, Andy Reid’s second receiver always gets his targets, and Baldwin is a big target to throw to. Look for Baldwin to win the job and have a good season, as the Chiefs will be much improved offensively this season. If Baldwin stays healthy, he could see 45-55 catches for 700 yards and a handful of touchdowns. Not bad for a WR5 who has gone undrafted in most leagues so far this season.
