When the Oakland Raiders come to mind in fantasy football, there is not much value other than Sebastian Janikowski and depending on the circumstances, Darren McFadden. But this season there is another player who may surprise people, especially when it comes to fantasy points.
If former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Terrelle Pryor is named the starter for the 2013-14 season, he will be worth owning in fantasy leagues as a valuable backup. The Raiders are not going to be very good, but with the opportunity there for Pryor to take 35 to 40 snaps, the fantasy upside is actually high. Running quarterbacks always have added value because of the dual threat opportunities. Last season, Terrelle Pryor started in one game. In this game he completed 13 of 28 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Not an impressive line by any means, but Pryor also added 49 yards and a touchdown on the ground. In most leagues this totals about 25 fantasy points. Pryor likely will not be able to put up that many points on a consistent basis, but with his rushing ability it is not out of the question for him to average 17-20 fantasy points per week.
If Pryor is named the starter, he becomes a top 20 fantasy quarterback with top 15 upside. If you wait on a quarterback in your drafts, or do not select a backup, Pryor is your guy. Assuming Pryor starts all 16 games, he would be projected to have 3000 yards passing and 700 yards rushing, with about 20 total touchdowns. This comes out to a weekly average of around 17 to 18 fantasy points per game. By comparison Matt Ryan averaged 19 fantasy points per week. Terrelle Pryor’s fantasy value (if he starts) is a lot higher than he will get credit for and is worth a roster spot.
