For the last seven years, Eagles fans have been waiting for Brent Celek to become one of the better tight ends in the NFL. But, Celek has had only one good season. In 2009 Celek caught 76 passes for 971 yards and eight touchdowns. Apart from that season, and a few games in the 2011 season, Celek has just been an average performer at the tight end position, and with below average hands.
During the offseason, new coach Chip Kelly made upgrading the tight end position a priority by signing former Texan James Casey and drafting Stanford tight end Zach Ertz. Clearly, Kelly was unimpressed by Celek even before coaching him, and for good reason. One of Kelly’s key teachings are ball control, Brent Celek does not possess that skill. Eagles fans will remember on several occasions where Celek has had balls bounce off his hands only to be returned for six points.
Celek will likely be third in line to receive touches as a tight end, and is not worth drafting in any leagues barring unforeseen circumstances. He may accrue a touchdown here and there, as Kelly will spread the ball around as much as possible, but there will likely be no form of consistency in terms of targets.
Stay away from Brent Celek in fantasy football this season as his ceiling is lower than most other players that will be available. Ertz and Casey will have much better fantasy value this season.
