The San Diego Chargers haven't necessarily had many surprises over the past few seasons. As a team, they have struggled to live up to the expectations that come with possessing a talented roster.
This year might be a bit different.
A fresh start with Mike McCoy at head coach and what I would call grounded expectations could do the sole Southern California NFL franchise some good moving forward.
As in real life, fantasy football is all about expectations.
Can Philip Rivers revive what has become a fledgling career? What about the possible emergence of former first-round pick Ryan Mathews? No, I am not going to fall into that similar trap that many of us have in the past.
Instead, I am going to go with some relatively new blood.
Second-year tight end Ladarius Green didn't set the world on fire as a rookie in 2012. The Louisiana-Lafayette caught only four passes and was active in only three games. The learning curve from small-school college standout to the NFL proved to be relatively lengthy for the ultra-talented youngster.
However, the lanky 6'6" and 238-pound tight end has all the physical tools necessary to be a consistent threat for Rivers in the Chargers' passing game and has received rave reviews thus far in camp.
While still stuck behind the aging Antonio Gates, Green has seen some first-team reps during the preseason and the results have been pretty good. He has eight receptions for 164 yards and two touchdowns on 10 targets in three preseason games. Considering that Gates hasn't played a full 16-game slate since 2009, there is a good chance that Green will see ample opportunities to make an impact.
As limited as Green's redraft potential might be (late-round), he's an extremely solid under-the-radar dynasty option for those of you who like to stream at that position. With that said, look for a productive 2013 campaign from the second-year tight end.
Statistical Projections: 35 receptions, 420 yards and three touchdowns
