Less than two weeks after signing a one-year, $2.8 million contract with the New England Patriots, veteran wide receiver Reggie Wayne is no longer with the team.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Wayne asked for his release from the Patriots — a request the team granted on Saturday as it dwindled its active roster to 53 ahead of Thursday's season opener.
Wayne, 36, decided to sign with the Patriots late last month in large part due to his feeling that they were in the best situation to win the title. It's not yet known why Wayne requested his release. In fact, it's a bit surprising considering the Patriots wide receiver situation. With Brandon LaFell on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, there was room for Wayne among the team's top receivers.
With Wayne out of the equation, it appears that Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, Aaron Dobson and Chris Harper will be the Patriots top three receivers entering the regular season.
Wayne hinted that he would be willing to sign with another team if the situation was a fit. Though, this could spell the end of the line for the future Hall of Fame receiver.
