As the Chicago Bears look to prepare themselves for a busy offseason with cap room to go after difference makers on the defensive side of the ball, they continue to look for additional ways to create more cap room. Chicago is actively shopping tight end Martellus Bennett around the league, working to trade the 28-year-old tight end.
Bennett is set to make $5.085 million next season in the final year of a four-year, $20.4 million contract he signed with Chicago as a free agent in 2013. While Bennett has been a major contributor in the Bears' offseason in previous seasons, including a 90-reception, 916-yard season in 2014, he saw a reduced role in 2015 and has been surpassed by Zach Miller on the Bears' radar.
While Bennett should certainly attract some interest from teams in need of a tight end, it remains unlikely that Chicago is able to land the compensation they would be looking for Bennett. Teams around the NFL likely know if push comes to shove, the Bears will end up releasing Bennett. Either way, Bennett will not be in Chicago when the 2016 season begins.
