While Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan would have preferred that his decision remained private for a bit longer, Fox Sports NFL insider Jay Glazer broke a story Monday morning indicating that Buffalo will throw Tyrod Taylor out there under center when Week 1 comes calling.
Fresh off a preseason performance on Saturday that saw the Bills quartet of quarterbacks complete 30-of-33 passes for nearly 400 yards against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Glazer's report indicates that the team has been most impressed by Taylor.
And why not?
The former Virginia Tech star, who has attempted 35 regular season passes in four seasons (all with the Baltimore Ravens), has been more than impressive this summer. In three preseason games, the 26-year-old signal caller has completed 77.4 percent of his passes without an interception. He's also put up 108 rushing yards and a score on 11 attempts.
Showing a unique combination of accuracy and athleticism, Taylor has a chance to put up a solid season as the Bills starter. What he has displayed in three exhibition games, no matter how meaningless they are, cannot be overstated.
With Taylor now starting, it will be interesting to see what the Bills do with their other three quarterbacks. Will EJ Manuel find himself as the odd-man out despite a solid preseason himself? What about Matt Cassel? He's also played well. It seems unlikely that the Bills would keep all three on the roster, opening up the possibility that Matt Simms might end up as the team's No. 3 quarterback.
From a fantasy perspective, Taylor's emergence is interesting. He has a stellar supporting cast around him, including Pro Bowl running back LeSean McCoy and one of the best young receivers in the game in the form of Sammy Watkins. Add in Charles Clay, Robert Woods and Percy Harvin to the mix, and there's a good chance Taylor will respond by putting up a surprisingly good fantasy campaign. Though, he's likely nothing more than a waiver-wire add at this point.
