The phantom hamstring injury that Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler suffered against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday will reportedly keep him out at least two weeks.
NFL Media's Ian Rapoport, citing sources close to the situation, was the first to provide that time frame:
With Cutler now out of action for at least the next two weeks, Jimmy Clausen will get an extended look for the Bears. Considering this is an entirely new coaching staff, led by offensive coordinator Adam Gase and head coach John Fox, there are no guarantees that Cutler will retain his starting job when he returns.
Though, it's unrealistic to expect Clausen to do to much in Cutler's stead. The former second-round pick out of Notre Dame completed 14-of-23 passes for 121 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception against the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. Over the course of his six-year career, Clausen has thrown five touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions in 18 games (11 starts).
Chicago faces the Seattle Seahawks on the road next week before hosting the Oakland Raiders in Week 4. If Clausen's stint as the starter extends past that, he will be under center in Kansas City the following week.
