When the Chicago Bears drafted wide receiver Kevin White with the seventh overall pick in this year's draft, there was optimism that the rookie could immediately step into a prominent role. Brandon Marshall was gone, creating an opening for the No.2 receiver spot opposite Alshon Jeffery.
Now things have taken an unfortunate turn as a result of his shin injury. Around the NFL shared Ian Rapoport's report that the Bears' first round pick could open the season on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. Rapoport told NFL Network that White hasn't done any running as of now.
It would be a devastating blow for this offense as they look to rebound from a 5-11 season with a new coaching staff. It's even more concerning given Ed Werder's report from just a few days ago, saying White's running was set to increase this week.
While more positive reports come out about Jay Cutler in training camp under new offensive coordinator Adam Gase and head coach John Fox, it's reached the definition of insanity with people expecting different positive results from him in the regular season.
Cutler will need help around him and if White misses a major portion of the season, Chicago is looking at Marquess Wilson as the starter opposite Jeffery. Eddie Royal has likely locked up the slot receiver role, but this coaching staff will face unforeseen challenges if White misses a significant chunk of the season.
Fantasy Spin
While White was the 46th wide receiver coming off the board in fantasy drafts, that's only for re-draft leagues. He was a top-20 receiver for dynasty leagues and his fantasy stock would take a significant blow if he misses significant time. It not only takes away crucial reps in training camp and during the preseason to further develop his skills, but he would be unable to develop chemistry with Cutler. Even when or if he returned to the field this season, he would be significantly behind his fellow wide receivers.
If he misses significant time, White isn't worth a draft pick in any fantasy leagues. Even if your league holds injured reserve spots, he would likely return in a limited role and not be in rhythm with the offense late in the season. The player whose fantasy stock could benefit if White misses the season is Royal. While defenses focus on sticking double coverage on Jeffery, Royal would be Cutler's go-to receiver and could put up some monster numbers with the high-volume targets.
