Tennessee Titans quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a Grade-2 sprain of his MCL Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. Considering this type of injury is more severe than the less serious Grade-1 sprain, it shouldn't come as much of a surprise that the rookie isn't expected to suit up next week against the Atlanta Falcons.
Bleacher Report's Jason Cole, citing sources close to the situation, reported on Tuesday that Zach Mettenberger will likely get the start against Atlanta.
While the injury won't require surgery, a three-to-four week recovery time has to be expected. Not only is this bad news for the Titans' hopes of breaking their four-game losing streak, it sets back the progression of Mariota during an all-important rookie season.
Through five games, Mariota is completing nearly 64 percent of his passes with nine touchdowns, five interceptions and a solid 92.6 quarterback rating.
From a fantasy perspective, not a single member of the Titans should be considered a realistic play against the Falcons on Sunday. In fact, Mettenberger is unlikely to put up anywhere near top-20 fantasy numbers from that position. Atlanta has scored three defensive touchdowns on the year and has been much improved in that aspect of the game under first-year head coach Dan Quinn.
