The NFL will always be a business and if you don't perform, they won't hesitate to cut bait and move on quickly. It's a lesson we learn often on cut day and we see once again with news that the New Orleans Saints are releasing Stanley Jean-Baptiste.
It comes as a surprise for two big reasons. First, just a little over a year ago Jean-Baptiste was the Saints' second-round pick. The 58th overall pick was expected to be a project as a 6'3" corner with intriguing tools, but needed time to work with coaches.
New Orleans just didn't find it to be worth the time, even after announcing starter Keenan Lewis will miss the next four-to-six weeks after hip surgery. After essentially redshirting him last year, the Saints are moving on from the young corner, though there remains a chance he could return to the practice squad.
Jean-Baptiste will first go through waivers, with claims being processed on Sunday. He was certainly an intriguing name in the draft and was selected with a top-60 pick, so the potential is there. Teams love having big corners, something he certainly fits, but questions will certainly be raised as to why the Saints moved on so quickly.
