Preseason position battles always seem to find a way of working themselves out, whether it be one player stepping up with a monster preseason or an injury deciding the battle. Brandon Coleman and Nick Toon were in competition to be the New Orleans Saints' third receiver to start the season, now the competition has been decided.
Fox Sports reported Toon will miss the next two-to-three weeks with a high ankle sprain, an injury that has been known to linger. Toon was already likely slipping behind Coleman in the battle with reports, that he was falling out of favor with the coaching staff.
Coleman, an undrafted free agent, was noted as the most impressive player in training camp by Saints' coach Sean Payton. He didn't record a reception on Saturday against the New England Patriots, dropping a touchdown pass in the first quarter. At 6'6', 225 pounds, he has the size to go up and be the physical, imposing receiver who Drew Brees can throw passes up to in three-receiver sets. It could also allow Coleman to be used as a red-zone target, more heavily used with Jimmy Graham in Seattle.
Coleman is currently going outside the top 200 by average draft position, while Toon was outside the top 300. Until Coleman really shows off in the preseason, his ADP will likely remain around the same range. Toon was off the radar in fantasy leagues and should remain off the radar now.
