Report: Redskins Plan to Start Kirk Cousins Week 1

Susan Lucci would be impressed with the level of drama currently unfolding around the Washington Redskins. Two days after the Redskins announced that Robert Griffin III had passed the league's concussion protocal and would play this week against the Baltimore Ravens, and one day after they reversed course on that completely, the team's reported plans for Week 1 of the regular season include starting Kirk Cousins, not RGIII.

The level of ridiculous is sky high here.

After initially clearing RGIII after the team allowed him to be used as a rag doll against the Detroit Lions last week, the Redskins released this statement from an independent neurologist on Friday:

So while it's going to take 1-2 weeks to draw "a firm conclusion" on RGIII's playing status, the team is running through a plan to start Kirk Cousins before a final determination can be made.

Based on what we saw against the Lions last Thursday, it's safe to conclude that the Redskins had absolutely no issue putting RGIII's health at risk by continuing to play him in a meaningless preseason game. The embattled quarterback then returned to practice after being cleared—a decision that was retracted only after he practiced this week.

One has to wonder if the Redskins would have played RGIII if not for that report from the independent neurologist. This comes over two years after the team drew widespread criticism for playing the former No. 2 pick with a serious knee injury.

At this point, we have to wonder if RGIII and the Redskins should just end their relationship. It's not going too swimmingly for anyone involved, and one side is seeing his health impacted a great deal by it.

Until then, enjoy the Kirk Cousins show.
