The Tennessee Titans looked past the waiver wire and sought out a trade to improve their running back depth on Sunday. After news came out on September 1 that rookie David Cobb is "week-to-week" with a calf injury, Tennessee traded for Terrance West on Sunday.
West had a chance to compete for the starting gig with the Cleveland Browns, but failed to seize the opportunity despite Duke Johnson missing a chunk of training camp and Isaiah Crowell disappointing. Despite coaches repeatedly calling out the running backs, it just never seemed to flip a switch for West and resulted in him being in jeopardy of not making the Browns' roster.
Whilel West made it past cut day, there was speculation he was being shopped around the NFL. Now he will get a change of scenery and a brand new opportunity with the Titans.
Tennessee will send a conditional pick for West, adding needed depth at running back. Bishop Sankey was more impressive this preseason but questions still remain if he can do it consistently, while Antonio Andrews isn't exactly the type of security you like from a backup running back.
West was the 94th overall pick in 2014 and quickly passed Ben Tate on the depth chart. But later in the season, Crowell started eating up more of the carries. West averaged 3.9 yards per carry last season and should fit pretty well behind Sankey until Cobb returns. Hopefully he can have a more favorable impression on the Titans' coaching staff than he left in Cleveland.
From a fantasy perspective, West doesn't retain any real value on the lower end of a committee behind an offensive line worse than what he had in Cleveland. His role will take an even bigger hit when Cobb returns, and turns this running back group into a fantasy wasteland.
