Robert Griffin III burst on the NFL scene in the 2012 season. Redskin fans have not been this excited about a quarterback since Slinging Sammy Baugh came out of Texas Christian University in 1937. His impact was immediate.
Griffin threw for 3200 yards for 20 touchdowns for 65.6 completion rate. He had only five interceptions. Combined his quarterback stats led to 102.4 rating. His running netted 122 attempts for 815 yards. He averaged 6.9 yards and had seven touchdowns. He also had 12 fumbles, but lost only two.
The high price Washington paid for Griffin means that they love his talent and abilities. Yet there is some fantasy concerns that fans should have.
Griffin’s knee injury during Washington’s loss to the Seahawk’s was huge.
The problem with Griffin’s knees is a possible pattern. In college, Griffin had another ACL i. After removing the damaged ligament, your surgeon will replace it with a piece of tendon from another part of your leg. In the Redskins game against the Ravens last year sprained his LCL (0r lateral collateral ligament damage). He had to miss the rest of the game and the next one against the Browns.
After Griffin started to recover from his surgery he quickly talked about recovery. He talked about going back to his old ways of doing things. Unfortunately he can’t. There will have to be some changes.
With Griffin’s knee injury history it’s obvious he and the Redskins will have to change their Zone-Read formations. He can’t run the same way he did before. His body won’t let him. He can fizzle out as quickly as or quicker than Gale Sayers.
Griffin will have to learn to develop reading defenses. Griffin can’t just run every time he sees an opening or his receivers covered. He will have to develop seeing the whole field. Griffin needs to look for his second, third and sometimes fourth option of his receivers.
If Griffin can make these adjustments he has the potential of a hybrid Michael Vick/Drew Brees. With him only playing in practice and not preseason games it will be interesting to see how he progresses this season. He will not get game time experience but opposing teams will also not get an idea of what the Redskins offense will look like.
For fantasy football, Robert Griffin III's value will depend. If you are in a 10-team league you can have the luxury of making him your backup quarterback. If your league has 12 or more teams it could get dicier. If you do draft him as your starter it would be good to have a good backup quarterback.
