Robert Griffin III NOT Cleared to Play

Shortly after the Washington Redskins indicated that Robert Griffin III was cleared to play this weekend against the Baltimore Ravens after suffering a concussion last week, further analysis from doctors tell us a completely different story.

NFL independent neurologist Robert N. Kurtze released the following statement regarding RGIII's situation (via NFL.com):

"Per discussion with Neuropsychologists and with Anthony Casolaro M.D., we had anticipated yesterday that the patient would be cleared for full participation in gameplay this weekend; however, upon further scrutiny today of the neuropsychology data, I agree with the neuropsychologist that he should be held from gameplay this weekend and be retested in one-two weeks before a firm conclusion to return to gameplay can be made."

In what has been a disastrous week for the Redskins and their much-maligned quarterback, at least from a PR perspective, this latest information differs from what head coach Jay Gruden had indicated on Thursday:

"He is cleared from all the doctors, the neurologist he has been cleared," Gruden said. "We still want to talk to the player and make sure he is ready to go mentally and our trainers make sure they feel like he is ready to go also. Being cleared by the doctor does not mean the player is feeling 100 percent so we gotta make sure he feels ready to go to."

The latest information obviously puts RGIII's Week 1 availability into question. If he's tested and cleared next week, he will likely start. However, the two-week window leaves open the possibility that either Kirk Cousins or Colt McCoy could start the season opener against the Miami Dolphins.

From a fantasy perspective, this news is meaningless in the grand scheme of things. None of the Redskins' three quarterbacks are viable standard-league options. Going up against a stout Miami defense in Week 1, none of the three would even be DFS options.
