This is a really nice problem for the Denver Broncos to have. With C.J. Anderson etched in stone as the team's starting running back, Ronnie Hillman has been impressive this summer.
Hillman, a third-round pick back in 2012, has put up 120 yards on 16 carries for an average of 7.5 yards per rush this preseason. That's apparently enough for new Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak to claim that Hillman is now "1B" behind Anderson on the team's depth chart.
This comes with former second-round pick Montee Ball struggling a great deal in preseason action. He's averaging under three yards per attempt through two games.
It's obvious that Kubiak and company are noticing something in practice as well. Hillman entered the 2014 off-season program without being guaranteed a roster spot this season. He's responded by performing extremely well in the team's new zone-blocking scheme—a scheme that might not fit Ball's talents to the best of its ability.
For Hillman's part, he seems to think the new blocking scheme is one of the primary reasons he's having success:
"It opens up holes," the fourth-year running back said. "I don't know what the offensive line is doing but they're doing something right because I'm getting some lanes. There was one play where I saw Ty (Sambrailo, the rookie left tackle) fall down and get back up and still came back and made a block. That just shows you the athleticism he has and all those guys have up front."
There are a couple things to look at here.
If Ball is not the primary backup to Anderson, there's a chance the Broncos may just look to trade him prior to Week 1. That's only magnified by the fact that second-year running back Juwan Thompson has also out-performed Ball in the preseason.
In what to appears to be an offense that will feature running backs on a more consistent basis, the Broncos backfield is an intriguing fantasy option. Anderson finds himself as an obvious RB1 option. Though, it will be interesting to see if Hillman can see his value increase to FLEX levels. We all know how much Kubiak loves to utilize the run game in his offense.
