A day after a critical loss to the Buffalo Bills on Thursday Night Football, New York Jets quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick had surgery on Friday to repair torn ligaments in his left thumb. The surgery, which was expected to take place after this week's game, will help ease some of the pain Fitzpatrick has played through in his non-throwing hand since he suffered the injury against the Oakland Raiders.
Because it was on his non-throwing hand, Fitzpatrick was able to play through it for the most part until the Jets reached a point in their schedule where he could have surgery and have an extended period of time to recover. Now coming off a Thursday game, Fitzpatrick will have 10 days before he has to take the field against the Houston Texans.
Fitzpatrick isn't expected to miss any time as Jets' coach Todd Bowles said but if he ultimately had to, Geno Smith would start in his place. Fitzpatrick has thrown for 1,983 yards and thrown 15 touchdowns with nine interceptions on the season.
