Playing a major role in Philip Rivers attempting a San Diego Chargers single-game record 65 passes in a loss to the Green Bay Packers was rookie running back Melvin Gordon.
Unfortunately for Gordon and the Chargers, that role was about as negative as it gets. Gordon put the ball on the turf twice in the first half, including a lost fumble in the second quarter. That last fumble led to Mike McCoy and the Chargers benching their rookie for the entire second half.
Filling in for Gordon were Branden Oliver and Danny Woodhead, who combined for just 31 yards on 14 attempts.
It remains to be seen whether the benching will have a long-term impact on Gordon's snap count, but fantasy owners should be a tad concerned here. In addition to losing out goal-line and short-yardage situations to Woodhead, Gordon simply hasn't produced when he's been on the field.
The rookie running back has now tallied just 270 rushing yards in six games and is averaging 3.8 yards per attempt. He's also lost two fumbles on the season. That's not good for anyone involved.
It will definitely be interesting to see how the Chargers handle Gordon's fumble issues. Benching him made all the sense in the world, but it's rather obvious that he's the most-talented running back on the team. And short of Rivers being tasked with tossing the rock 50-plus times per game, something needs to be done as it relates to the Chargers' running back situation.
For now, it's safe to say Gordon is a must bench in year-long and dyno leagues. In terms of DFS contests, he's also a must avoid right now.
