San Francisco 49ers Release Jarryd Hayne

In the midst of a down season for the San Francisco 49ers, things got worse when running back Carlos Hyde was ruled out in advance of Sunday's game. It would have seemed like an opportunity for Jarryd Hayne to see some snaps and maybe make an impact, but that is now all for not with the 49ers releasing the Australian rugby star.

There was a lot of excitement when Hayne signed with the 49ers, for the NFL it would bring in more fans from Australia to watch football and perhaps it could be the beginning of a new pipeline for football talent. Hayne was given punt returning opportunities to start the regular season, but was replaced just a week ago.

Now as the 49ers look to bring in more help at running back for Sunday's game, they clearly felt Kendall Gaskins offered the team more than Hayne. Now fans of Hayne just wait and see if he gets another opportunity on a 53-man roster in the NFL and is claimed off waivers or if he goes unclaimed and perhaps joins a practice squad.
