Just when we thought more news couldn't break today following the trade of Percy Harvin from the Minnesota Vikings to the Seattle Seahawks, it appears that the San Francisco 49ers have pulled off what has to be considered a coup.
According to multiple reports, San Francisco has acquired Anquan Boldin from the Baltimore Ravens for a sixth-round pick in April's draft. Boldin, one of the most productive receivers in the NFL over the last five seasons, wasn't going to take a pay cut to return to Baltimore next season. While reports did seem to indicate that he would retire rather than go to another club, it seems that the opportunity to play for another Super Bowl contender might have changed his mind.
Boldin put up 106 yards and a score against these very same 49ers in the Super Bowl last month. He now joins Michael Crabtree to form one of the most dynamic receiving duos in the entire league. Crabtree and Boldin were among the most productive receivers in terms of stats last season. They ranked one and two in terms of drop rates; both under four-percent. Put them on the outside with a strong armed Colin Kaepernick, who has improved in his accuracy over the last year or so, and opposing defenses are going to have a hell of a time stopping what promises to be dynamic offense in San Francisco.
The 49ers will pay Boldin $6 million next season; in the final year of his contract. That being said, there remains a chance that he agrees to an extension, which would lower the cap hit for '13.
On related news, the St. Louis Rams and Arizona Cardinals have officially asked to join Notre Dame as an independent, meaning they can set their own schedule; which wouldn't include four games against Seattle and San Francisco.
Joking aside, the 49ers received tremendous value here for a damn-fine wide receiver. They now have "only" 14 picks in April's draft; poor team.
