Senior Bowl Notebook: Day 2 Winners and Losers

As expected heavy winds continued to play a big factor into the south team's practice as quarterbacks were forced to show their arm strength through the heavy gusts and special teams units had to adjust accordingly to the best of their ability.

Most are in agreement this squad possess more talent and depth than the north roster and it starts under center with the signal callers.  The majority of eyes were on Derek Carr, Jimmy Garaoppolo, and David Fales who all had there ups and down especially Garaoppolo.  Looking at his body of work at the senior bowl thus far he has struggled in all aspects, but started to show glimpses of improvement near the end of practice throwing the ball with velocity.  He ended his day connecting with Texas' Mike Davis for a long touchdown after he put a double move on Auburn's Chris Davis.

This seems to be a trending theme for him.  The word after the Shrine game and week of practice was Garaoppolo looked out of place and uncomfortable early in the week, but by the end of the week he was one of the best players there.  Time will tell if he can continue the trend upwords.

Here is a snapshot of other winners and losers of day two of the south practice.

Winners

Robert Herron, Wide Receiver, Wyoming

Herron came into to the week as somewhat of an unknown.  Many knew he was a speedster who did most of his damage after the catch, but playing against second tier competition surrounded him with numerous question marks.  Herron looked nearly uncoverable today while running precise routes using with his smaller frame and quickness to separate from his defender.  Along with his speed Herron is showing off his detail to attention along with strong hands as he has put himself in the top half of his peers thus far.

Ryan Grant, Wide Receiver, Toledo

Another smaller target Grant was anything but that today catching everything thrown in his radius.  His ability to put himself in a position for his quarterback to get him the ball and then to finish the play with his good hands is what had quarterbacks throwing his way early and often today.  Other than Abbrederis I couldn't tell you another wide out that caught more passes today.

Pass Rushers

The ability of the south's team to rush the passer was evident today as names like Christian Jones, Kyle Van Noy, and Dee Ford were all consistently in the backfield beating there opponent with a variety of moves.  Van Noy beat his man with spin moves and power while Jones and Ford showed great dip around the edge with their top tier quickness in both one-on-ones and seven-on-sevens all day.

Other Noteworthy Performances

- Arthur Lynch impressed me during pass blocking drills showing good leverage and technique.  He was only beat twice throughout the whole series of drills and that was by Christian Jones twice.  Don't feel bad Arthur.

- Alabama's Kevin Norwood had a series of good catches both of the short and long kind as well as the catch of the day going up and over Chris Davis to catch the ball at its highest point on a deep fade along the sideline.

- Cornerback Jaylen Watkins from Florida contained his man throughout the day no matter the name on their jersey.  Running step-for-step with Jordan Mathews to bat a ball down and even picking off Derek Carr on a deep post intended for Cody Hoffman.  Those are arguably the two biggest names at the position for the south team.

Losers

Billy Turner Offensive Tackle, North Dakota State

Poor Billy Boy.  The division two stud showed his lack of competing against top tier competition.  Every time I looked Turner was a full step behind his man who ran right around him for a sack.  Don't get me wrong Turner was getting burned by names like Christian Jones (have I mentioned him yet?), Dee Ford, and Chris Smith.  Turner was even torched on the inside as well when Will Sutton ripped by him getting skinny with a great swim move.  This is talent that Turner has never played with and will be forced to adjust sooner than later if he wants to get drafted.

Aaron Colvin Cornerback, Oklahoma

The last thing you want to see during events like these filled with tons of talent is a man go down with an injury.  Colvin hit the ground and grimaced in pain while he held his knee after Solomon Patton made his cut on a 10 yard dig route during one-on-one drills.  It was later released that Colvin suffered a torn ACL.  Terrible news for a solid talent who was looking forward to showcasing his skills during the week.
