A much chillier atmosphere the second time around at Ladd-Peebles stadium for the north practice as the winds were gusting near 25 miles per hour making it especially difficult for the quarterbacks as well as the special teams units.
While possessing a roster full of defensive talent the north squad was showing off their growing pains on offense today with Tahj Boyd, Stephen Morris, and Logan Thomas under center. Here are some rapid fire notes highlighting the players who stood out on day two for the north squad.
- Chris Borland was impressive just warming up. Showing off the smoothest back pedal and lateral quickness of any linebacker in the group Borland taught his peers fundamentals 101 with his actions during linebacker drills.
- Louisville's defensive end Marcus Smith was showing great burst off the snap during drills. Smith is a tweener that is listed at outside linebacker this week where he will try to showcase his versatility.
- Kain Colter looks like he has been playing the wide receiver position for years. After switching from quarterback at Northwestern Colter looked quick and shifty during his routes and made multiple catches, including a one-handed catch on the sideline on a seven-yard out as he dragged his feet in bounds. Colter has some of the biggest hands of his group and showed he belonged today.
- Jarred Abbrederis caught the most balls out of anyone today. Consistently putting his body in the right position for his quarterback to throw him a catchable ball. Of the "catchable" balls thrown his way I only saw him miss one, and that was with Jimmie Ward lined up against him.
- Everyone had a good chuckle watching 40-yard field goal attempts come up short at the kickers expense. Wind was blowing straight in to their faces the majority of practice.
Iowa linebacker Christian Kirksey had the hit of practice. During running back pass blocking drills West Virginia Charles Sims got to meet Kirksey at full speed who bulldozed him over at the point of contact all in one motion.
Check back for the south teams practice notes later on this afternoon.
