With Rashad Jennings out due to a toe injury on Sunday, Shane Vereen got an opportunity to play a larger role for the New York Giants. He took advantage by putting up 95 total yards and a score on 13 touches.
Our immediate response after that performance against the Washington Redskins was to recommend Vereen as a waiver-wire pickup. And for good reason. Here's a guy that provides a lot from both a rushing and a receiving perspective. After all, Vereen caught 158 total passes over the past three seasons. Give him more touches on the ground, and he'd be a stellar fantasy option.
That was all fine and dandy.
Unfortunately, some rather shocking news came out of Giants camp on Monday indicating that Vereen will miss the remainder of the season due to a triceps injury. He was immediately placed on injured reserve and will require season-ending surgery. That's brutal for both the Giants and fantasy owners the world over.
If there's any good news to be had from Giants camp on Monday its that Jennings looks to be good to go next week after missing Sunday's game. He's likely going to retake the primary ball carrier duties in New York. Though, Jennings has been far from a rosterable option in year-long leagues.
He put up 118 total yards without a score on 34 touches in the first two games of the season. Not really great splits right there. With games coming up on the road against the Minnesota Vikings and Green Bay Packers, it's going to be tough sledding for the Giants running game, Jennings in particular, over the next two weeks.
Someone to definitely keep an eye on as the season progresses is third-year back Orleans Darkwa, who will again be tasked with taking on an increased role now that Vereen is out. Darkwa put up 62 yards and a score on 11 touches in Jennings' stead on Sunday. If he's proven to be more productive than Jennings moving forward, we wouldn't be surprised to see the unknown quantity become more relevant, at least from a DFS perspective.
