On the same day that Stedman Bailey was suspended four games for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy, the St. Louis Rams added veteran pass catcher Wes Welker as his replacement.
Welker, 34, hasn't played this season after suiting up for the Denver Broncos last year. In 14 games with Denver, the five-time Pro Bowler recorded 49 receptions for 464 yards and two touchdowns in 2014.
With a long list of concussions in his past, there was some concern that Welker would never return to the NFL field — questions he tried to answer by proclaiming himself healthy this past offseason. Unfortunately, no team found the veteran worth the risk up until the Rams signing him Monday following a work out with the team.
Always linked to Tom Brady with the New England Patriots, Welker is only a few years removed from being one of the most productive receivers in the NFL. During his six-year career with the Patriots, from 2007-2012, Welker recorded a whopping 672 receptions for 7,459 yards.
It remains to be seen just how much Welker has left in the tank, but the Rams needed to find another proven pass catcher for their struggling passing offense.
