For the second time in less than a calendar year, Miami Dolphins safety Louis Delmas has suffered a torn ACL. The 28-year-old former Detroit Lions standout was carted off the practice field on Monday. This led to speculation that he suffered yet another serious injury—speculation that turned into confirmation during an initial diagnosis.
Delmas, who started 13 games for the Dolphins last year, tore his ACL in the team's Week 14 outing against the Baltimore Ravens. Despite this, he was able to recover in time for Miami's June minicamp and was a full go in training camp this month.
The six-year vet has an extensive history of injuries, meaning that this latest setback could potentially derail a once promising career. He's set to become a free agent next season. The former second-round pick from Central Michigan has started 76 games in his career, recording 400 tackles and seven interceptions.
With Delmas lost for the year, Walt Aikens is expected to start at free safety opposite Reshad Jones.
