The Curious Case of Justin Forsett

The Curious Case of Justin Forsett

When Justin Forsett was released by the Baltimore Ravens last week, most around the NFL were thrown for a loop. How do you release your starting running back just over a week before the start of the season?

In reality, it was nothing more than a procedural move. Forsett never cleaned out his locker, and expected to re-sign with the Ravens after they had their 53-man roster and practice squad filled out.

But what does this mean from a fantasy perspective? Is Forsett still the lead dog in Baltimore? How will his return impact Buck Allen, Terrance West and rookie Kenneth Dixon?

If you ask Forsett, he still believes that the starting job is his

That's fine and andy.

Unfortunately for fantasy owners the world over, we can't be too sure of this. Forsett played sparingly during the preseason with both West and Dixon proving themselves capable of playing big roles in the team's offense. Forsett himself is coming off an injury-plagued 2015 campaign that saw him put up just 641 rushing yards in 10 games.

This came on the heels of the veteran putting up a career-best performance under then offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak the previous season. That year saw him tally over 1,500 total yards and 12 scores en route to finishing as the eighth-best fantasy running back.

Again, that's fine and dandy.

It's what Forsett has not done in his seven other seasons that should worry fantasy owners. The 30-year-old back has failed to tally even as much as 650 rushing yards in any season outside of 2014. In this, he's also never finished better than a FLEX option.

Is that someone you should be relying on in your fantasy leagues this season? We're not too sure of that.

While it's nice to see Forsett return to the Ravens, his fantasy outlook is dim this season. West and Dixon look good. The Ravens have options at running back. And in reality, it's hard to imagine Forsett seeing enough touches to make a huge impact here.
