Miami Dolphins Reach in the First Round with Ja’wuan James

The first reach of the 2014 NFL Draft came later than usual when the Miami Dolphins selected Ja’wuan James with the 19th overall selection.

It was more than well documented that the Dolphins needed offensive line help after the debacle that surrounded Jonathan Martin and Richie Incognito.  Many thought Cyrus Kouandjio or Morgan Moses would be the more desirable offensive tackles left once the big three had been taken as well as Zack Martin.

At 6’6” tall and weighing 311 pounds,  James is scheme versatile having played in a man-power and zone concepts at Tennessee.  He has an enormous 82-inch wing with a strong punch that he uses well.  Furthermore,  he showed the ability to get up the field and make plays at the second level in the 49 collegiate games he started.

On the other hand,  the former Volunteer has his knocks with the biggest being he plays loose throughout his body meaning his hand placement can be problematic,   his feet can be misplaced and he leans on opposing pass rushers.

James has experience at guard meaning the Dolphins can put him at right tackle where he played in college or he can be plugged at left guard inside Branden Albert.

Ultimately,  it would appear the Dolphins have a plan for James that goes towards shoring up the mess that is their offensive line.  James has the size to fit the bill but can he fulfil he fulfil the lofty expectations now placed on his shoulders?
