Tony Gonzalez Fantasy Football Profile

What more is there to say about the great Tony Gonzalez at this point? He’s been one of the most dependable and consistent fantasy prospects, possibly ever.  In his illustrious 16-year career, Gonzalez has missed a grand total of two regular-season games and has not finished worse than sixth among fantasy tight ends since 2000.  Gonzalez is entering his fifth season with the Atlanta Falcons and his 17th and final (for real this time) season in the NFL.  Let’s take a look at how the closing chapter of an amazing story will likely play out.

2013 Outlook

Obviously splitting targets from Matt Ryan with top-tier wideouts Julio Jones and Roddy White has never been a problem for Gonzalez, as he hauled in 93 receptions for 930 yards and eight scores last season.  Some analysts and fantasy owners are worried that the addition of workhorse running back, Steven Jackson, is going to negatively impact Gonzalez’s numbers.  Even if this ends up being true, we’re still looking at Gonzalez hauling in 75-80 passes which will keep him in the top five for tight ends.  With all of the crazy circumstances and injuries in the tight end ranks this offseason, Gonzalez’s value is higher than it’s been in quite some time.  If you miss out on Jimmy Graham or Vernon Davis, Gonzalez is a helluva consolation prize.

Dynasty Outlook

It’s definitely well know that this is going to be Gonzalez’s last hurrah. Now this doesn’t mean that he doesn’t have any value in a dynasty setting, but you have to be careful about acquiring him.  Under no circumstances should you trade for him. Mortgaging your future for a one-year run at the championship is something you can’t do in the dynasty world.  But if you’re in a startup draft and select Gonzalez you’ll be okay as long as you pair him with someone like Tyler Eifert or Zach Ertz who be a dependable TE1 in the near future.  That way it will be a smooth transition from Gonzalez headed into next season.

2013 Statistical Projections: 78 receptions, 825 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.
