Week 1 is officially in the books, and boy was it a crazy start to the 2013 season. While there were a number of fantasy surprises throughout the week, the top 10 is a list of the usual suspects, for the most part. Let’s take a look at the 10 fantasy studs that had the biggest Week 1 performances.
10. Reggie Bush - Running Back, Detroit Lions (25.10 points)
If you’ve been listening to me, at all, since Bush was signed by the Lions this offseason, you shouldn’t be surprised at all by his terrific performance against the Minnesota Vikings. Bush rushed for 90 yards, adding another 101 in the passing game and caught a touchdown, good for 25.10 fantasy points. Look for this to be a regular occurrence this season.
9. Michael Vick - Quarterback, Philadelphia Eagles (25.52)
The Eagles kicked off the season by going into hostile territory in Washington and shocking the world with their win over the Redskins. The Eagles ran 93 offensive plays in the game, including an absurd 53 in the first half. Vick put on a show, throwing for 203 yards, rushing for 54 and accumulating three-total touchdowns. As long as the Eagles can successfully run this many plays, Vick will be a legitimate QB1 option this season. Or until he gets hurt, anyway.
8. Anquan Boldin - Wide Receiver, San Francisco 49ers (26.80)
Boldin is the first surprise on this list. Yes he’s a phenomenal pass catcher and the best possession receiver in the league, but you don’t usually see possession guys crack the top 10, and especially the top five for their position. But Boldin, with help from Colin Kaepernick, went off against the lackluster Green Bay Packers’ secondary, to the tune of 208 receiving yards and one touchdown. With Boldin set to be the No. 1 receiver in San Francisco for most of the fantasy football season, he’s a must start from here on out, even against the Seattle Seahawks this week.
7. Demaryius Thomas - Wide Receiver, Denver Broncos (28.10)
You shouldn’t be shocked that Thomas made the top 10. Being the No. 1 receiver (or 1A next to Wes Welker now) on a team with Peyton Manning at quarterback is going to put up big numbers every week. While fantasy owners were worried after a lackluster first-half by Thomas, he made up for it in the second half, racking up 161 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
6. A.J. Green - Wide Receiver, Cincinnati Bengals (28.20)
Another playmaker that shouldn’t surprise you, at all. Despite going up against Charles Tillman on Sunday, Green put up 162 receiving yards and two touchdowns en route to finishing as the second best fantasy receiver for Week 1.
5. Eli Manning - Quarterback, New York Giants (28.80)
If you’ve read any of my work regarding Manning, or listened to me talk about him on eDraft Sports Radio at all, you know that I’m definitely shocked he made the top five in Week 1. In a loss to the Dallas Cowboys, Manning went off for 450 passing yards and four touchdowns. He might have finished the week right behind his big brother if it weren’t for three interceptions. I still wouldn’t bank on Manning doing anything like this regularly.
4. Adrian Peterson - Running Back, Minnesota Vikings (29.10)
If you’re surprised that Peterson was the best fantasy running back, you probably should find a new hobby. Peterson did what he does best, running for 93 yards and two scores. He also adding 18 receiving yards and a touchdown. The scary part is that these are low-end numbers for what you can expect this season.
3. Victor Cruz - Wide Receiver, New York Giants (29.80)
Any time a quarterback throws for 450 yards and four touchdowns, the team’s No. 1 receiver is going to have a good day. Cruz did just that against Dallas, catching three touchdowns on 118 receiving yards as the Week’s No. 1 fantasy receiver. The only downside to Cruz’s fantasy potential moving forward, is that it’s directly tied to the inconsistent success of Manning.
2. Colin Kaepernick - Quarterback, San Francisco 49ers (30.68)
The Packers spent the entire offseason scheming to shutdown Kaepernick’s chances to run. So what did Harbaugh, Kaepernick and Co. do? They abandoned the quarterback runs and put on a passing clinic. Kaepernick proved he’s no gimmick and a true quarterback by torching the Packers’ for 412 passing yards and three touchdowns. Kaepernick is a must start every week this season.
1. Peyton Manning - Quarterback, Denver Broncos (46.28)
Manning and the Broncos kicked off the NFL season with a bang last thursday, lighting up the Baltimore Ravens for 462 passing yards and seven touchdowns. With all of the weapons available to Manning in Denver, there’s a good chance that he’ll be competing for top fantasy honors every week this season.
