Season Overview
From the outset of his rookie campaign, this Georgia product proved to everyone why he belonged in the National Football League. Crowell recorded 32 yards and two scores in his NFL debut Week 1 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. That was good enough to rank him among the top-10 fantasy running backs for the week. In fact, Crowell scored four touchdowns in his first five NFL games.
However, it wasn't all without a hiccup. Crowell failed to put up more than 88 rushing yards in a single game and wasn't used as consistently as many would have hoped—a situation that resolved itself when the Browns waived Ben Tate. When on the field, Crowell was an extremely productive running back for the Browns as a rookie.
Consistency
Considering Crowell struggled seeing consistent playing time throughout the year, there's little doubt that he was a boom or bust proposition. In looking at player consistency from the running back position, eDraft takes into account games in which a player put up either 100-plus yards and/or a touchdown. Considering Crowell failed to have a 100-yard game, his consistency mark wasn't too high. Overall, the Georgia product ranked 24th among running backs in this category. That was only made possible by the eight touchdowns he scored on the season.
Crowell also put up less than 20 rushing yards six times on the season. That matched the total amount of games in which he reached the end zone. Again, it was all a boom or bust proposition.
Best Four-Game Stretch
From Week 10 to Week 13, Crowell tallied 254 total yards and three scores. In that four-game span against Cincinnati, Houston, Atlanta and Buffalo, the rookie averaged close to 11 fantasy points per game. However, it must be noted that the outing against Atlanta saw Crowell put up 20.8 fantasy points, which ballooned the stats a bit.
Worst Four-Game Stretch
From Week 6 to Week 9, Crowell put up a total of 109 yards with one touchdown. In two of those games—Oakland and Tampa Bay—the young running back had a combined one rushing yard. Overall, he put up less than 14 fantasy points in these four games.
Dynasty Outlook
Unless you plan on streaming Crowell and Terrance West on the Browns, it's going to be hard to justify much more than a mid-round pick on this running back There are just too many unknowns at this point. How will the Browns allocate the carries between the two? Who will be under center? How will the new offense look? Much like Browns' offensive players through the years, Crowell is a victim of the situation in Cleveland.
If this youngster were able to put up 20-plus attempts per game, he'd be a legitimate RB1 option in standard 12-team leagues. Unfortunately, we know that's not going to be the case. Draft this dude to be a bench option and be surprised when he puts up solid FLEX numbers. Play the matchups and check out the trends before deciding to put him in your lineup as well.
