Tyler Wilson Looking Great, Oakland Raiders Starter?

OTA’s are in full swing, and quarterback Tyler Wilson has been rather impressive for the Oakland Raiders, but is that enough to get him the starting job?  While his early success is definitely something to be happy about amongst Raider Nation, don’t count on him starting for the silver and black just yet.

Granted it is very early in the training camp process, but Wilson has performed well and shown great promise thus far.  According to many reports, Wilson has shown accuracy and a strong arm during OTA’s causing some to believe that he’s not just a “typical rookie” as he has outshined both  Matt Flynn and Terrelle Pryor so far.

When drafted by the Raiders in the fourth round, he was expected to be one of the better quarterbacks in this years draft class, and Raider Nation sure hopes that’s the case.

His competition isn’t necessarily that great either.  Flynn has been named the presumed starter, but that doesn’t mean he’s a shoo-in.  Last season, Flynn lost the starting job to Russell Wilson during training camp with the Seattle Seahawks, and again, it’s his job to lose this year.  Reports have indicated that Flynn hasn’t been great thus far, but has shown improvement as OTA’s continue.

As of now, Wilson is competing with Pryor for the backup role.  Pryor hasn’t impressed either, but, like Flynn, has shown some improvement.

Realistically, the three are in the same boat.  All three have to learn a new offense with a new offensive coordinator.  Pryor was with the Raiders last year, but this year the offense will be different as Greg Olson is the new offensive coordinator.

While Wilson is impressing, it’s just too early to name him the starter or believe him to be the starter for the Raiders this season.  He’s showing a lot of promise, but it’s still very early in training camp.

As camp continues, the competition will heat up, but it’s ultimately Flynn’s job to lose, and while Wilson has been impressive,  Flynn will most likely be the Raiders starting quarterback come September 8th, as they open the 2013 season against the Indianapolis Colts in Indy.
